Planets have different natures and different influences on our life. In astrology, we describe the planets as benefics or malefics, according to their nature and general influence. It should be emphasized that even though we are talking about "benefics", this doesn't mean that these planets always have only positive impact or that “malefics” are always negative. The exact influence of each planet can only be understood when we know its position in the sign and house, as well as the influence of aspects it creates with the other planets.
BENEFICS
Benefics are planets with a predominantly positive influence. Their nature is associated with well-being and contentment. Benefics give us comfort and satisfaction. In astrology, there are two benefic planets, Venus and Jupiter.
Venus is the so-called minor benefic. It represents interpersonal relationships and harmony. The basic principle of Venus is to unite, connect, and harmonize, which are considered positive qualities. Venus can also be negative if it is too focused on its desires, physical comfort, and pleasure. A negative Venus can be vain and materialistic.
Jupiter is the so-called major benefic. It represents the feelings of satisfaction and happiness, as well as opportunities that fall into our lap. The basic principles of Jupiter are expansion, growth, and optimism, which are generally positive qualities. Jupiter can be negative when it relies too much on luck, when it overdoes things, or when it takes too much risk. A negative Jupiter can also be wasteful and dogmatic.
MALEFICS
Malefics are planets with a predominantly negative influence. Their nature is associated with obstacles and overcoming difficulties. Malefics help us persevere and endure difficult times. In astrology, there are two malefic planets, Mars and Saturn.
Mars is the so-called minor malefic. It represents conflict and aggression. Its basic principle is to bravely and decisively achieve what it wants, and for that, it is often required to also be competitive, self-centered, and combative, which can be seen as negative qualities. Mars can also be positive when it displays its positive qualities, such as determination, protectiveness, and courage.
Saturn is the so-called major malefic. It represents the hard work, obstacles, and patience that are required in order to achieve desired goals. The basic principles of Saturn are limitation, conservatism, and strictness. Saturn can also be positive when it shows its positive qualities, such as focus, discipline, and dignity.
What about the other planets?
The Moon and Mercury are considered neutral planets, which means they act as benefics when they are under the influence of benefics, or as malefics when they are under the influence of malefics. The Sun is considered to be slightly malefic. The modern planets are not included in this categorization, although they are usually considered malefic when they are in negative aspects with personal planets.
