Astrological signs are personality archetypes, each consisting of a set of certain characteristics. These characteristics are a combination of the components of a particular sign. Each sign consists of four such components — polarity, modality/quality, element, and planetary ruler.
POLARITY
Polarity describes the natural expression of energy in a particular sign. There are two polarity groups in astrology — the positive and the negative polarity.
MODALITY/QUALITY
Modality/quality describes how each sign uses its energy. In astrology, there are three different modalities — cardinal, fixed, and movable/changeable modality.
ELEMENT
Element describes the side of personality that is most prominently expressed in each sign, the sides being the spiritual, the intellectual, the practical, and the emotional side. There are four different elements in astrology — fire, air, earth, and water.
PLANETARY RULER
Planetary ruler is a planet that rules a particular sign. The characteristics of each planet are always most clearly expressed in the sign it rules because there is a natural correlation between the sign and its ruler. In astrology, there are ten different planets — the Sun, the Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto.
