Quadrants

Quadrants are “quarters” of the astrological chart. If we divide the chart along the Ascendant – Descendant axis and simultaneously along the Midheaven – Nadir axis, we get four quarters. Each quadrant contains three houses. Based on the characteristics and life areas the houses represent, each quadrant has its own specifics.

Knowing the characteristics of each hemisphere is useful for birth chart analysis because the distribution of the planets across quadrants tells us where their energy is focused and in what kind of way the individual expresses the energy of the planets in their life.

FIRST QUADRANT: personal identity

The First quadrant contains the First, the Second, and the Third house.

If a chart is First quadrant dominant, this tells us that the individual has dedicated a lot of their time to others in their past lives. The individual’s priority have been the needs of other people, which meant that they constantly adapted to others and made compromises at the expense of working on themselves. Because of this, they didn’t manage to fulfil their own needs or develop a strong identity. The purpose of such a chart is for the individual to work on their basic knowledge and skills, as well as developing their own identity. This time around, they must learn to rely on themselves and put their own wants and needs before anything else.

Any planets that are positioned in this quadrant, need to become self-motivated, decisive, independent, and self-sufficient. The individual needs to learn how to write their own destiny. In order to achieve this, they must first work on their confidence and develop trust in their abilities. They need to learn to believe that they are capable of writing their own destiny, without relying on others or caring about their opinions.

Positively expressed planets in the First quadrant usually mean that the individual likes to work on themselves and their own abilities. Their personality is based on healthy self-worth, on strong personal values, on constant pursuit of improving their knowledge and skills, as well as on excellent mental and communicative abilities.

Negatively expressed planets in the First quadrant mean that the individual finds it difficult to see others’ point of view because the individual’s knowledge is based purely on their own experience. If the individual is too focused on their personal development, they can become somewhat egocentric. If they isolate themselves from others too much, they run a risk of no one noticing their talents and their rich knowledge.

SECOND QUADRANT: personal expression

The Second quadrant contains the Fourth, the Fifth, and the Sixth house.

If a chart is Second quadrant dominant, this tells us that the individual has been very sociable in their past lives. Their priority has been establishing personal contacts and collaboration with others. This meant that they have spent all their time focusing on the activities happening around them and they have been constantly involved in group pursuits or social initiatives. Because of this, the individual didn’t spend much time on their own talents and they didn’t have the opportunity to self-express. The purpose of such a chart is for the individual to work on their own talents. This time around, their social contribution is their personal self-expression.

Any planets that are positioned in this quadrant, need to become expressive, creative, subjective, and intuitive. The individual needs to learn to express their personal ego and their creative abilities. In order to achieve this, they must first dedicate time to themselves and work on their personal talents and interests. They must learn how to stand out from the crowd, how to enjoy the attention, and how to appreciate their own individuality.

They also have a healthy self-esteem, they are charismatic, and they trust in their talents. They are not afraid of standing out from the crowd and love to express their individuality because an authentic personal expression is very important to them. They also like to take risks and leave others surprised.

Negatively expressed planets in the Second quadrant mean that the individual is too prideful and overconfident. They want to be special, so they love praise and recognition for their talents and individuality. Because of this, it can be easy to take advantage of them or manipulate them. They are aware of their effect on others, which they can use to their advantage.

If a chart is Third quadrant dominant, this tells us that the individual has been too solitary and self-focused in their past lives. Their priority has been their personal needs, which meant that they kept to themselves and they have only had to care about their own goals and personal needs. Because of this, they didn’t develop the skills to collaborate with others or learn how to make compromises. The purpose of such a chart is for the individual to work on their own identity through their interactions with others. This time around, they need to learn to put others’ needs before their own.

Without outer motivation the individual is extremely passive. They care too much about others’ opinions, which leads them to constantly change their decisions. Their personal ego depends on what others think of them.

Their priority have been their personal interests, which meant that they have spent time developing their talents and expressing their individuality. Because of this, the individual didn’t have a lot of interest in the world around them and consequently didn’t make any significant contributions to the collective. The purpose of such a chart is for the individual to learn how to collaborate and how to contribute to social progress. This time around, their personal self-expression needs to be used to serve the larger community.

Any planets that are positioned in this quadrant, need to become collaborative, visionary, progressive, and focused on collective needs. It is important to them that they are included in whatever is happening in society. They wish to be popular, so they look for other people’s validation and sometimes they are too ready too adapt their personality and personal beliefs just to get it. They can be too focused on receiving the attention or admiration of others.
