A quick guide to karmic analysis (part 1)

In this article, we are going to take a closer look at the parts of the birth chart that can be looked at in the karmic analysis. Karmic interpretation can include several different parts of the birth chart; while some astrologers consider all of them, others only take into consideration some of them.

The information we can figure out from the analysis represents key elements of the past life story; from these elements, we can figure out the main themes the individual was dealing with, as well as the effects of the unfolding events on their psyche and their emotional state. Once we have a good idea of what the main elements and themes were, we can then use them to create a full life story around them. This story is not meant to be literal; it is a fable built around the psychological and emotional undercurrents, which we are getting from the planetary placements. In other words, once we know what it felt like, we can imagine what kind of events might have been the reason for these feelings. Although the story is meant to be symbolic, the information can often lead us quite close to the truth about what really happened in the individual's past life.

The most important part of karmic analysis is taking a look at the nodal structure, specifically the South node, which allows us to figure out key elements of the past life story. No matter what kind of method of analysis you use, the nodes always represent the main window into the past life dynamics and what you are supposed to learn from it, so they are a necessary part of the analysis.

In this article, we are going to focus on the interpretation of the South node. The following method of past life analysis is taught by Steven Forrest, one of the leading teachers in this field of astrology.

THE SOUTH NODE

The analysis often begins with the South node. This placement by sign and house represents the individual in their past life. It tells us who the individual was and what their character was like. Any planets that are located in proximity to the South node, can offer us some extra information about the individual's nature. This placement can also give some clues about the person's life circumstances.

THE SOUTH NODE RULER

The planet, which rules the sign of the South node, reveals more about the reasons why the individual struggled. If the South node is located in Scorpio, Aquarius or Pisces, we can analyze both planetary rulers, the classic one and the modern one. Each of them can give us different information: the classic ruler can tell us more about the concrete circumstances the individual lived through; the modern ruler can tell us about the individual's psychology, meaning, how the individual might have felt in the given circumstances. In this way, the South node ruler can also give us more information about the individual's character in their past life.

Once you have analyzed both of these points, look at the aspects they are making to any planets in the chart. Different types of aspects will color the story with more specific details.

PLANETS IN TRINE OR SEXTILE ASPECT TO THE SOUTH NODE OR ITS RULER

Planets, which make positive aspects to the South node or its ruler, can reveal more details about the circumstances the individual lived in. Positive aspects give us the following information:

- who or what provided support to the individual in the given circumstances

- who or what "helped" the individual into the given circumstances

- who or what represented the temptations the individual couldn't resist

PLANETS IN SQUARE ASPECT TO THE SOUTH NODE OR ITS RULER

Planets, which make squares to the South node (and, simultaneously, the North node) or its ruler, can tell us more about the circumstances, which have impacted the individual in a negative way, more specifically:

- who or what vexed or burdened the individual

- who or what blocked the individual

- what the individual was unable to integrate into their life

- who or what represented a constant challenge or a burden

- what was the one-time event that deeply impacted the individual, that perpetually angered them, seriously threatened them or perhaps even killed them

PLANETS IN OPPOSITION ASPECT TO THE SOUTH NODE OR ITS RULER

Planets, which make oppositions to the South node or its ruler, can also reveal some negative influences in the individual's past life, however, these influences were much more insurmountable than the ones represented by the squares. The oppositions can reveal the following:

- who or what completely blocked the individual or prevented them from doing what they really wanted

- the cruel facts the individual was ultimately unable to change, against which they were powerless or to which they had to submit in the end
