In this article, we are going to take a look at the nature of each major aspect and its effects.
CONJUNCTION (0° distance, orb allowance 10°; hard aspect)
A conjunction is an aspect, where two planets are located right next to each other. This means that their natures are linked, so they always work together; whenever we express the energy of one planet, we also express the energy of the other one. Based on the similarity of their natures and goals, the planets can mutually support or hinder each other. A conjunction can function as an easy aspect, if the conjoined planets have similar natures or goals.
SEXTILE (60° distance, orb allowance 6°; easy aspect)
A sextile is an aspect of opportunity, meaning the planets involved in a sextile have something to offer us; for example, they allow us to reach a certain goal or they help us develop certain abilities, skills, or talents, however, they require us to work for it. A sextile represents potential, it is up to us to develop it into a tangible skill.
SQUARE (90° distance, orb allowance 8°; hard aspect)
A square is an aspect, which connects two planets with cross purposes or different goals. This means that the planets are hindering each other. A square represents the challenges and obstacles we need to overcome in order to express both planets’ potential. A square offers us an opportunity to reach a certain goal or to develop certain skills; this, however, requires a lot of persistence, work, and an active pursuit, as well as a constant overcoming of obstacles and a readiness to personally grow through these challenging circumstances.
TRINE (120° distance, orb allowance 8°; easy aspect)
A trine is an aspect, which connects two planets that are typically in the same element. Their expression is, therefore, harmonious and doesn’t require of us any special effort. A trine represents our natural talents that are well developed and always available to us. On the other hand, there is also a great possibility that we won’t put much extra work into these talents, so we may never realize these planets’ highest potential.
OPPOSITION (180° distance, orb allowance 8°; hard aspect)
An opposition is an aspect, which connects two planets with cross purposes or different goals. The planets are located exactly opposite each other. Symbolically, this means that their purposes are also exactly opposite but the aspect they are forming requires them to cooperate and work together. As a consequence, these two planets must find a state of equilibrium, so that each of them can express their nature and fulfill their goal or purpose, while at the same time helping the other planet do the same.
